The steps of Pittsburgh, also known as the city’s public stairways, have historical significance as they were built during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. 

Originally, the steps were constructed to provide pedestrian routes for workers in hilly areas, connecting neighborhoods and allowing access to trolley lines and workplaces.
