Location: Northern Alaska
Gates of the Arctic National Park is the second largest national park in the United States, covering about 8.4 million acres. It's located entirely north of the Arctic Circle in Alaska. One of the park's distinctive features is that it has no roads or established trails. The name "Gates of the Arctic" comes from two mountains, Frigid Crags and Boreal Mountain. These mountains form a gateway-like feature through which the North Fork of the Koyukuk River flows.
