This park was established as a national monument in 1923 and was redesignated as a national park in 1930. The main attraction of the park is the Carlsbad Cavern, one of the largest and most famous cave systems in the world. The Carlsbad Cavern includes more than 119 known caves, all formed when sulfuric acid dissolved the surrounding limestone.
